Brewster, Mass., August 18, 2009 – Brewster rowing coach Mayrene Earle guided rowers to win 11 medals, including two golds, at the 2009 USRowing Masters National Championships in Camden, N.J., last weekend.
The rowers, who train with Earle at her MastersCoaching clinics, captured five silver and four bronze medals in addition to the two national titles. The MastersCoaching competitors ranged in ages from 22 to 76 and come from around the country; they included three from Massachusetts. MastersCoaching medaled in both eight-person and four-person sweep events as well as in a quadruple sculling event.
MastersCoaching crews won gold medals in the Women’s Open F Eight (ages 60 to 64) and the Women’s Open F Four with Coxswain.
They captured the silver medal in the following events: Women’s Open C Eight (ages 43 to 49); Mixed F Eight; Womens E Eight (ages 55 to 59); Women’s Open F Quadruple Scull, and the Womens Open E Four.
MastersCoaching crews won bronze medals in the following events: Womens Open D Eight (ages 50 to 54); Mixed Open F Four; Mixed Open E Eight, and Women’s Open Four.
This was MastersCoaching third year competing in the Masters Nationals. “We were up against our toughest competition ever this year, including several international crews and Olympians. I am so proud of what we were able to accomplish,” said MastersCoaching founder Mayrene T. Earle.
“The opportunity to compete at a national level is incredibly meaningful to these rowers, especially to older women, since their generation didn’t have the opportunity to row competitively when they were younger.”
The 2009 USRowing Masters National Championships were held Aug. 13 to 16, 2009, on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. This year’s regatta featured more than 1,800 entries from 147 clubs. They competed for national titles in more than 200 events. The regatta was the largest masters national championships in history.
Races at the Masters National are categorized by age group. Entrants calculate the average age of rowers in a boat to determine their appropriate race event.
